Book Stops in Pittsburgh

Last Wednesday we discussed why reading is so important to your overall well-being and why you should take the time, each day, to read.  Opening up your mind and relaxing with a good book is such a great way to spend a lazy weekend.

Have you ever wanted to spend a Saturday combing small bookshops for rare finds and unusual reads?  If so, we have compiled a list of some of Pittsburgh’s most raved about bookshops, each one as different from the next.

Amazing Books & Records, Downtown Pittsburgh and Squirrel Hill

If you are interested in books and records, this is the store to visit.  They have a wide collection of used books, rare and antique books, and a great selection of new books by local writers.  Their growing assortment of records are mainly focused in the genres of jazz, rock, and blues.  If you have any old items that you are looking to sell, they also do buy used records and books.  Amazing Books & Records also has themed event nights.  Make sure to check this book shop out if you are in the Squirrel Hill or Downtown areas!

Penguin Bookshop, Sewickley

Located about 20 minutes outside of Pittsburgh, Penguin Bookshop has been selling a wonderful selection of all genres of books since 1929.  They also sell cards, magazine, newspapers, and journals if your reading pursuits are geared more towards current events or writing.  They host many events for authors, including readings and book signings, and have a variety of events scheduled for this fall.  If you are in the Sewickley area, make sure to stop and browse their amazing selection of books.

Caliban Bookshop, Oakland (in between Pitt and CMU’s campus)

Nostalgic for your college days?  Caliban is located in North Oakland, right in between the campuses of CMU and Pitt.  Here you will find and assortment of old and rare books, prints, autographs, art, etc.  The books range from newer paperbacks to more scholarly works in subjects such as philosophy and history.  You might also spot a college professor searching for books on topics for their classes or research for their current writing projects.  This shop will also buy, sell, and appraise any of your old books, prints, autographs, photos, and original art, and has a thriving online business.  If you’re in North Oakland, stop by Caliban to see if you can find anything special.

East End Book Exchange, Bloomfield

This bookshop has old and some new, and hosts a variety of used and rare books in all genres from classic and contemporary fiction to history, travel, cooking, and children’s literature.  These books are in every type of condition you can imagine; from vintage to almost brand new.  This shop is fairly new, acting in a pop up shop style from 2011-2012 and in 2012 they opened their permanent shop in Bloomfield’s Little Italy.  They truly are your “friendly neighborhood bookstore”.

Duncan Comic Books and Accessories, West View

If you are a comic book, fantasy, sci-fi, superhero fan, you will love Duncan Comics.  Tom Duncan, the shop owner, is one of the coolest guys around town.  He knows your name and what you are looking for when you walk in and has an ungodly array and variety of comics, graphic novels, action figures, “toys”, and more. He and can literally help you find anything you are looking for and if he doesn’t have what you’re looking for in stock, he will go out of his way to get it for you.  Every type of comic book is available here and they celebrate the national comic book holidays like Free Comic Book Day.  Parking is a bit difficult, but this shop is a definite must stop if you are looking to extend or start your comic book collection.

City Books, North Side (Allegheny West)

Recently reopened in Pittsburgh’s Allegheny West neighborhood, City Books has a selection of new & used, foreign language, collectible, and rare books.  Right down the street from us here at Babb, Inc., it’s great to be able to take a leisurely walk to peruse this bookshop’s amazing collection of books ranging from fiction and non-fiction to their new sections in children’s literature, drama, food & drink, travel, local history and YA.  They are always willing to order anything you are looking for that cannot be found in the store and are beyond happy to help you pick out gifts for others if you are unsure what someone would like.  If you have some free time before a Steelers or Pirates game, a concert at Stage AE, or just visiting the neighborhood, make sure to stop in and check out City Books’ wonderful offerings.
